The Turf Care PA blog is your local resource for building a healthier, greener lawn in Southeastern Pa. From seasonal fertilization and weed control to aeration, overseeding, and soil health, we share practical advice tailored to turf-type tall fescue and southeastern Pennsylvania growing conditions. Our goal is to help homeowners understand what their lawns need, when treatments should be applied, and how professional care creates stronger, longer-lasting results.
The Worst Thing You Can Do to Your Lawn During a Heat Wave

When temperatures soar into the 90s and your lawn starts looking stressed, it's tempting to do everything you can to "fix" it. Ironically, some of the most common homeowner practices during a heat wave actually cause more harm than good.
At Lawn Care PA, we help homeowners throughout Downingtown, Chester Springs, and Southeastern Pennsylvania maintain healthy, resilient lawns. Here are the biggest mistakes to avoid when the summer heat arrives.
1. Applying Fertilizer During Extreme Heat
One of the biggest mistakes is applying a high-nitrogen fertilizer during a heat wave.
When turfgrass is already under heat stress, pushing rapid growth requires additional water and energy that the plant simply doesn't have. The result can be:
- Increased stress
- Leaf burn
- Shallow root growth
- Greater susceptibility to disease
Instead, allow your lawn to naturally slow its growth during periods of extreme heat.
2. Mowing Too Short
Many homeowners think cutting the lawn shorter means mowing less often.
Unfortunately, the opposite is true.
A short lawn:
- Exposes the soil to direct sunlight
- Increases evaporation
- Weakens the root system
- Allows weeds to establish more easily
During summer, keep cool-season grasses like tall fescue between 3.5 and 4 inches tall.
Longer grass shades the soil and naturally conserves moisture.
3. Watering Every Day
Daily shallow watering trains grass roots to stay near the surface where temperatures are hottest.
Instead:
- Water deeply.
- Water early in the morning.
- Apply approximately 1 to 1½ inches of water per week, including rainfall.
Deep watering encourages roots to grow farther into the soil where moisture remains available longer.
4. Applying Weed Killer During Extreme Heat
This is another common mistake.
Most broadleaf herbicides can stress both weeds and desirable turf when temperatures climb above approximately 85°F.
Applications made during a heat wave may cause:
- Temporary turf discoloration
- Increased lawn stress
- Reduced effectiveness
Unless you're treating a severe problem, it's usually better to wait until temperatures moderate.
5. Overseeding During Summer
Many homeowners notice bare spots in July and immediately buy grass seed.
Unfortunately, summer is one of the worst times to establish cool-season grasses in Pennsylvania.
Young seedlings struggle against:
- Heat
- Drought
- Heavy weed pressure
For Southeastern Pennsylvania, September is the ideal time for aeration and overseeding because soil temperatures remain warm while air temperatures begin to cool.
6. Assuming Brown Grass Is Dead
A brown lawn isn't always a dead lawn.
Tall fescue can enter a natural dormant state during extended periods of heat and drought.
Dormant grass often recovers once cooler temperatures and consistent rainfall return.
Resist the urge to panic or over-treat your lawn.
What Should You Do Instead?
During a heat wave, focus on protecting your lawn rather than forcing growth.
Here's what we recommend:
- Raise your mowing height.
- Water deeply one or two times per week.
- Avoid fertilizing until temperatures cool.
- Delay herbicide applications during extreme heat.
- Stay off drought-stressed turf whenever possible.
- Plan for fall aeration and overseeding.
